Special Education Director

Job Summary:
In coordination with administration, the Special Education Teacher will coordinate and provide developmentally appropriate educational services to students whose abilities differ from their peers while following Manhattan Christian’s mission to inspire students to live God-glorifying lives by teaching Christ’s lordship in faith, learning, and living.

General Qualifications:

  • Be committed to Christian Education in general (as defined, for example, in the MCS Statements of Faith and Purpose) and to Manhattan Christian School in particular.
  • Lead an exemplary Christian life, both in private and public settings.
  • Be an active member in a church that would support the doctrinal standards of Manhattan Christian School.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directs, monitors, and mentors Resource Room aides working with students who have disabilities.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates with the local public school district to complete special education evaluations
  • Develops an integrated plan for the education of each child by collaborating with classroom teachers, parents, psychologists and school staff
  • Develops Private School Service Plans for each student, setting learning goals and adopting modifications as necessary; ensures each student’s activities and lessons are planned and organized according to his/her abilities
  • Develops and teaches lessons that provide engaging learning opportunities for small groups and individual students while meeting required specifications of Service Plans
  • Implements Service Plans, provides ongoing or follow-up assessments, and continually tracks progress and makes modifications as necessary
  • Collaborates with classroom and homeroom teachers to ensure each student’s needs are met and plans are followed
  • Maintains knowledge of special education teaching methods, research, and best practices through professional development and study

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to maintain a calm and patient demeanor with all students.
  • Thorough understanding of various special education needs and services.
  • Thorough understanding of and the ability to implement a variety of effective teaching methods.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education required, Master’s preferred
  • MT teaching license or ability to obtain
  • Preference may be given to candidates with classroom teaching experience

Compensation:

  • Wages commensurate with experience as indicated on the MCS pay scale and based on assigned FTE. This is a 1 FTE position.  
  • Medical and Dental coverage available according to MCS teacher policy. For benefits this position is treated as a Professional Educators Contract position.
  • Paid Medical leave and personal days according to Professional Educators Contract policy.
